With the introduction of the new iPad, 3rd generation, and the retina display, apps are being updated by their authors to take advantage of the better graphics. Unfortunately, one of the disadvantages of better graphics is the fact that applications may double or triple in size. For this reason, the 16GB iPad may have fulfilled all your storage needs before the updates, but a 32GB or even a 64GB may be a better alternative now.

As an example, the latest update to the popular board game Monopoly increased the app’s size from about 280MB to over 900MB. This is a substantial increase in space. For this reason, you may find it necessary to discover which apps are your space hogs so you can make a decision on whether you need to uninstall a few apps to solve a storage capacity issue.

Follow these steps to see which apps are taking the most space and how much space each app is using on your iPad.

Find out how much space each app is using

1) Tap on the Settings icon

2) Tap on General

3) Tap on Usage

At the very top of the column you will see the word Storage and directly below you will see how much total space is available and used. If you wait a few seconds, the data will refresh to show you each installed app and the space used by it.

If you need to conserve space, you may always delete a space hogging app that you don’t use as frequently. Since your ITunes account keeps track of all your free and paid purchases, you may always download a deleted app to your iPad at a later date.

With a smaller capacity iPad and the introduction of the retina display and bigger apps, this app swapping technique may help to conserve space but still allow you to use all your apps at different times.
