I’ve owned both an Android based cell phone and now an iPhone, and like a lot of people I use Gmail. One of the more annoying issues is the problem of duplicate contacts sneaking into the contacts list on the cell phone. There are times when I literally have 3 or 4 entries for the same person in my contact list. This article will guide you through the steps to remove duplicate entries in your Gmail based contact list, as well as to make sure that only the entries you want in your contact list are there.

First of all, let’s sort through the contact list in Gmail and remove all the duplicates from it. Follow these steps to accomplish this:

1) Log into your Gmail Account by going to

http://mail.google.com

2) In the Upper Left Corner of Gmail, click on the Contacts option to get to the Contacts Screen

3) Under the More menu, click on Find & Merge Duplicates

4) A popup window will appear with all your duplicate contacts. Review the list to make sure you are merging all the right contacts, then click on Merge at the bottom of the window.

5) Once completed, your contact list should now be cleaned up.

The next step is to make sure only the contacts you want in your Contact list stay there. Gmail, by default, has a nasty habit of adding anyone you might email into your Contact list. Adding tons of miscellaneous contacts to your list and ultimately to your cell phone if you have the Gmail contacts linked there.

Follow these steps to change the way Gmail saves contacts.

1) In your Gmail Account, click on the Options button (the little gear symbol) in the upper right of your Gmail screen.

2) Click on Mail Settings

3) Under the General tab, look for the section entitled “Create contacts for auto-complete”, and choose “I’ll add contacts myself”

4) Click on Save Changes at the bottom of the screen

Now only the contacts you specifically save to your Contacts List will be there, and all the extra duplicate contacts have been removed.

Enjoy your cleaner Gmail contact list!
